In brief

Raloxifene is used to prevent and treat osteoporosis in women after menopause. It also lowers the risk of invasive breast cancer in postmenopausal women who have osteoporosis or are at high risk of the disease.

Raloxifene in Australia: what it is used for

Raloxifene is a tablet for women after menopause. In Australia it is approved to prevent osteoporosis and to treat it, and to lower the risk of invasive breast cancer in postmenopausal women who have osteoporosis or who are at high risk of invasive breast cancer. These uses are set out in the Evista consumer medicine information.
This listing shows raloxifene 60 mg. It does not name the manufacturer of the tablets supplied, so check the label on the pack you receive and confirm with your prescriber or pharmacist that it matches the treatment you have been prescribed.

Raloxifene vs Evista

Raloxifene hydrochloride is the active ingredient; Evista is a brand name. Evista is entered on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG 64709) as raloxifene hydrochloride 60 mg tablets in blister packs.
Other raloxifene brands listed on healthdirect include Fixta, Ralovista, Raloxifene Apotex, Raloxifene Auro and Raloxifene WGR. A different brand name does not mean a different active ingredient, but the pack label is what tells you exactly what you have.

Is raloxifene on the PBS?

healthdirect lists Evista as a film-coated tablet, Schedule 4 (Prescription Only Medicine), and available on the PBS. That listing applies to Evista; it does not confirm PBS subsidy for the product offered on this page.

How raloxifene works

Raloxifene acts on oestrogen receptors, and its effect differs from one tissue to another. On bone it has an oestrogen-like (agonist) effect. On the endometrium, the lining of the womb, it has no stimulating effect.

Raloxifene dosage

The usual dose is one tablet a day. It can be taken at any time of day, with or without food. For long-term benefit it is taken regularly, every day, at the dose your doctor has prescribed.

Who should not take raloxifene

  • Women who have not reached menopause or who could still become pregnant
  • Men
  • Anyone with a blood clot now or in the past
  • Anyone allergic to raloxifene
Raloxifene is not recommended when liver function is impaired. A history of stroke or atrial fibrillation should be raised with the doctor first.

Raloxifene side effects

Common side effects include hot flushes, leg cramps, muscle spasms, swelling of the hands, feet and legs, and flu-like symptoms.
Seek medical help straight away for severe pain or swelling in a leg, severe stomach pain, shortness of breath or pain when breathing. Being immobile for a long time raises the risk of blood clots, so on long journeys get up and move around regularly. Breast examinations and mammograms should continue during treatment.

Raloxifene interactions

The Evista consumer information names warfarin and cholestyramine. Oestrogens or hormone replacement therapy should be combined with raloxifene only under medical supervision.

Raloxifene price: compare pack sizes

All packs on this page are 60 mg. These examples are calculated from the listed prices at the shop’s Australian-dollar rate on 7 October 2026, before delivery or other checkout charges.
Strength Pack size Pack price Price per tablet
60 mg 30 A$93.10 A$3.10
60 mg 90 A$259.29 A$2.88
60 mg 360 A$618.87 A$1.72
Per tablet, the 90 pack costs about 7.2% less than the 30 pack, and the 360 pack about 44.6% less. For 360 tablets that is roughly A$498 less than paying the 30-pack rate. The 10 pack (A$35.80) costs more per tablet than the 30 pack.
A lower price per tablet means a larger upfront payment. Choose a quantity that matches your prescription and check the expiry date. Prices can change, so confirm the current pack price before ordering.
